StopBadware.org Welcomes PayPal and VeriSign as SponsorsCompanies join Google, Lenovo, and Sun Microsystems in supporting badware initiative
“Both PayPal and VeriSign have devoted a significant amount of time and resources to addressing the unique challenges of protecting consumers and keeping the Internet safe, particularly in the identity management and security space,” said John Palfrey, co-director of StopBadware.org and Executive Director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School. “We are very excited to have these companies aboard the StopBadware.org team as they both bring a wealth of knowledge in fighting badware and other online threats that put consumers at risk.”
“Providing a safe user experience for consumers online has always been core to our business," said Michael Barrett, Chief Information Security Officer for PayPal. “By joining the StopBadware.org community, we can help protect compromised Web sites and their customers from future attacks. Most importantly, we look forward to collaborating with consumers, academics and industry peers to educate users on the dangers of spyware, phishing, and other harmful online practices.”
“Maintaining the security and stability of the Internet infrastructure is essential for consumers, businesses and governments to perform vital tasks online,” said Ken Silva, Chief Security Officer of VeriSign. “Spyware, viruses and other increasingly sophisticated security threats have the potential to negatively impact e-commerce and the user confidence needed for its growth. We are pleased to lend our support to StopBadware.org whose research and analysis, web site clearing house and reports provide a valuable service in educating consumers about the threats of badware.”
Launched in January 2006, StopBadware.org serves as a central resource to help educate people about badware and spotlight those companies and websites that embed these programs into downloadable software applications and Internet code. Users can visit StopBadware.org to check whether programs they want to download are infected with badware and alert others to programs they have encountered that include malicious software such as spyware, incessant pop-up ads, or other obtrusive programs.
In addition to its in-depth software application reports and web site quick reports, StopBadware.org has also developed a web site clearing house containing over 220,000 identified URLs, currently identified through Google, that host, link to, or distribute badware. Utilizing this database, StopBadware.org has broadened its education outreach to consumers by shedding light on specific web sites and URLs that can infect an Internet user’s computer, just by visiting a site. As with its reports, users can search the clearinghouse database by visiting the StopBadware.org web site.
