Cambridge, Mass., June 11, 2010 — StopBadware, a non-profit organization that fights computer viruses, spyware, and other badware, announced today that Paul Mockapetris will join its board of directors.

Mockapetris created the Domain Name System (DNS), an essential part of today’s Internet infrastructure, in the 1980s. He is now the Chief Scientist and Chairman of the Board at Nominum, a global provider of DNS and DHCP solutions to communication providers. He has previously served as chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and as a program manager at the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).

“StopBadware is privileged to have someone with Paul’s experience and reputation join our board,” said executive director Maxim Weinstein. The board, chaired by PayPal CISO Michael Barrett, also includes Vint Cerf, Esther Dyson, John Palfrey, Ari Schwartz, Mike Shaver, and Weinstein.

Mockapetris will bring to StopBadware his experience working with a number of Silicon Valley startups. “StopBadware has already developed a great reputation as an independent source of data and expertise about malicious and compromised websites,” he said. “I look forward to helping the organization build on that success and establish a path to long term growth and sustainability.”
